Maintain Control Groups

This screen is used to maintain Control Groups. A Control Group is a grouping of related Facilities and obligations that are self-contained within the group. To see your properties in Explorer, you must first organize all your properties into Control Groups and build a Schematic. As of Release 25.1, Injection Facilities can be attached to Control Groups as top-level facilities (they cannot have any child facilities, and they cannot be a child of any other facility). For more information on Injection Facilities in a Control Group, go to the Injection Facilities section of this page.

The screen has four tabs: Master, Schematic, Security and Close History. The Control Group Security tab can be secured differently from the other Control Group tabs.

Master

General details are captured about the Control Group. If the Control Group already exists, Linkage Details are shown for Region, Financial Group and Voucher Number.

To create a new Control Group a user will need to have a Corporate role with Full Access to the ControlGroupCreate and the ControlGroupMaintenanceEdit security components. To delete a Control Group a user will need to have a Corporate role with Full Access to the ControlGroupDelete and the ControlGroupMaintenanceEdit security components. To edit an existing Control Group a user will need access to the Control Group via a role with Full Access to the ControlGroupMaintenanceEdit security component.

When creating a new Control Group, the screen assumes you want the new Control Group set up in the Region you are currently in. This can be changed at a later time by accessing Administration > Region > Control Groups.

When setting up a Control Group in a previous production date, you must first set it up in the region's current production date. Then, setting up the Control Group in previous months will automatically request and schedule an amendment for you.

Deleting a Control Group Master will also delete the associated Schematic, Amendment Requests and Facility Charges.

Field

Description

Field

Description

Date*

Defaults to Current Production Date of the region. The entered date cannot exceed the Current Date of the region.

Control Group ID*

Enter a meaningful Control Group name. This ID will appear in Explorer.

Control Group Name*

This is the Control Group name.

PA Responsible*

This is the User ID responsible for the Control Group.

Gas Flow Enabled

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No.

Report Zero Transfers

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No (only valid for gas flow-enabled Control Groups).

Generate Oil Processing Order

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No. This field indicates that you want Qbyte Metrix to dynamically generate the Oil Schematic for non-zero oil dispositions instead of configuring the Oil Schematic.

When this is No, there will be a Validate Oil Dispositions option on the Explorer menu at a Control Group level and a Battery level. This will verify that all battery Oil dispositions within the Control Group (or just the selected Battery) match the current Control Group Schematic. This can be useful to check for orphan Oil dispositions that may have been left when the Control Group Schematic was modified.

When this is Yes, there will be a View Oil Schematic option on the Explorer menu instead of the Validate Oil Dispositions. The View Oil Schematic option will appear only at the Control Group level.

Using this ability to generate a Dynamic Oil Schematic will assist those clients whose oil dispositions change destinations each month, thereby requiring changes to the Oil Schematic. Setting up a Control Group to use a Dynamic Oil Schematic will mean that the entered Control Group Schematic will not be used for battery oil processing and instead the processing order will be determined at run-time based on the non-zero oil dispositions entered in the Battery Balance.

When using Dynamic Oil Schematic functionality within a Gas Flow enabled Control Group, there cannot be circular flow between Facilities of any product. For example, you cannot have Oil flowing from Battery A to Battery B, and the Gas flowing from Battery B to Battery A.

Generate Market Masters

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No.

Default Oil Purchaser

Must be a valid Owner ID if entered. Required for Generate Market Masters.

Do not Archive Control Group

Selecting this checkbox indicates you do not want any archive reporting created for this production date/Control Group during the month end close process.

Override Month End Report Group

If entered, this group will override the Default Month End Report Group (below).

Default Month End Report Group

This is a display-only field that shows the Report Group that has been set as the Default to use during the month end close process.

Produce Partner Reporting

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to Yes. Yes, indicates that Petrinex Partner Reporting will be generated.

Allow Generation Type Selection

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No. Yes, indicates that SAF/OAF File Generation will allow SAF/OAF Data and the SAF/OAF File to be generated separately.

  • Set this flag to Yes if you have cross Control Group transactions such that there are SAF/OAF entries created for the same submitting Facility within more than one Control Group.

In these scenarios, you would run the SAF/OAF with the SAF/OAF Data option for each Control Group, which will generate the data for any transactions that occurred within the Control Group, regardless of the Facility. Then you would run the SAF/OAF with the SAF/OAF File option for each Control Group, which will gather all the SAF/OAF Data previously generated for each Facility attached to the Control Group, regardless of which Control Group the transaction took place.

Group is Locked for Oil Processing

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to Yes.

Allow Pricing of Zero Oil Volumes

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No.

Note: This may need to be set to Yes in very rare circumstances. See Message Centre Messages - ALCREV0029.

Allow Special Heavy Oil Processing

This is obsolete. It will be removed from this screen in a future release.

Allow Intergroup Oil Transfer

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No.

Allow Intergroup Water Transfer

This is a Yes/No field that defaults to No.

Note: This flag is not used when validating BATTRUCK records within Field Data Capture, only the Allow Intergroup Oil Transfer flag is used for BATTRUCK records, regardless of product. This flag will be used when validating Water Battery-to-Battery Transfer FACDISP records within Field Data Capture. It is recommended that FACDISP/FACRCPT records are used instead of BATTRUCK as they have more functionality.

Schematic

The Schematic describes the flow of fluid between Facilities within the Control Group. Before building your Schematic, the Facilities to be included must be on production.

  • For non-gas-flow Control Groups, transfers cannot be set up from a gas plant Facility.

  • If a true Gas Gathering System (GGS) does not exist, you can flow the gas from the battery to plant directly.

  • For gas-flow Control Groups, it is possible to add a transfer from a gas plant Facility, typically to another gas plant Facility.

  • As of Release 25.1, Injection Facilities can be attached to a Control Group. They must be attached directly to the Control Group (cannot be a child of another facility), and they cannot have facilities attached to them (cannot be a parent to another facility). For more information on the impacts of adding an Injection Facility to a Control Group see the Injection Facilities section below.

In View mode, the Schematic will be displayed in a tree format. A go-to feature is provided to navigate quickly to a Facility. A Print Friendly button is available to print the Schematic as it appears.

In Edit mode, options are available to:

  • Save and Continue: The purpose of this button is for ease of use. It is advised to use this new button each time Facilities are added, removed, and/or moved from/within the Schematic.

  • Validate: This performs an overall hierarchy structure validation. If there are any errors, appropriate messages will be displayed.

  • Move up a Facility.

  • Remove a Facility: This allows you to remove a Facility from the Schematic (will remove the selected Facility and Facilities linked to it).

  • Copy To Scratchpad: This will copy the selected Facility, and all Facilities linked to it.

  • Cut To Scratchpad: This will cut the selected Facility, and all Facilities linked to it.

In Edit Mode, all Facilities that are on production and are already linked to the Control Group, or Facilities that are on production but not attached to a Control Group appear in the lower grid. Filter criteria can be entered to reduce the list of Facilities shown.

To add a Facility to the Schematic:

1. Highlight the parent Facility in the tree by selecting it.

2. Select one or many Facilities in the lower grid that you would like to be attached.

3. Click the Add to Schematic button.

  • This will link the selected Facilities to the highlighted Facility in the tree. If a Facility (parent) exists multiple times in the hierarchy and a child is added to the parent Facility, the child will automatically be added to all instances of the parent. This also applies to when Facilities are deleted and/or moved.

There are many validations that will be done when the Save button is clicked. Some examples include:

  • Error: Facilities cannot transfer in a circle

  • Error: Facility cannot transfer to itself

  • Error: Partner Operated batteries cannot be attached to a gas-flow Control Group

When the Save button is clicked, the Facility Charge Schematic is rebuilt automatically.

Detach a Facility from a Control Group

When saving a Control Group after detaching a Facility, the following message will be displayed if any associated Facility Charges were found for the detached Facility.

When a Facility is detached from a Control Group, Qbyte Metrix will retain all Facility Charges attached to the Facility until the Facility is re-attached to another Control Group or month end.

When the detached Facility (with Facility Charges) is re-attached to a Control Group, a pop-up message will indicate that there are detached Facility Charges and will ask the user if they should be re-attached. At this time, the user has the option re-attach the Facility Charges (or not).

Reminder: At month end (Region Close), when a Control Group is closed (current month or amendment) any detached Facility Charges for the production month being closed will be deleted.

Attach a Facility to a Control Group

When saving a Control Group after adding a previously detached Facility with associated Facility Charges, the following pop-up message is displayed.

As the message indicates, if you click OK, all associated Facility Charges will be re-attached to the Facility. You are not given a chance to select the Facility Charges you want to re-attach at this time (i.e., you only needed two of the three Facility Charges to be re-attached but all three are re-attached).

If you select Cancel from the pop-up window, the Facility Charges will remain detached.

After you click OK, the following pop-up window message is displayed asking you to review the re-attached Facility Charges.

Reminder: To edit, delete or review Facility Charges, the Facility Charge Maintenance must be used. Detached Facility Charges will not be displayed on the Facility Charge Maintenance for the re-attached Facility. If you create a new Facility Charge for a Facility that has a matching detached Facility Charge(s), the following message will be displayed indicating that a detached Facility Charge already exists.

If you want to retrieve the detached Facility Charges:

  1. Try detaching and re-attaching the Facility.

  2. Click OK to re-attach the Facility Charges.

Detaching/Re-attaching a Facility that is Unitized

When Facilities with unitized properties are detached, the Facility Charges at the unit are only detached if there are no other Facilities remaining in the Control Group with unit wells attached (i.e., Battery FC102 is unitized).

When battery FC102 is removed from the Control Group, the unit RLTU1 is also detached from the Facility Charge Schematic. At this time, all associated Facility Charges for the battery as well as the unit will be detached.

When the Facility FC102 is re-attached to another Control Group, and you click OK to re-attach the Facility Charges, the Facility Charges at the unit, as well as the Facility, will be re-attached.

When saving the Control Group and clicking OK to re-attach the Facility Charges, if the To Control Group already has the same unit (unit spanning), the following message will be displayed. This message lets you know that the copied unit did not overwrite the existing unit Facility Charges.

Detaching and Re-attaching Facilities with Facility Charges with Local Formulas and/or Global Factors

If the detached Facility used a local formula for the Facility Charge, when the Facility is re-attached, the local formula will be converted to a global formula.

The Global Factor Values will be copied to the new Control Group and the following message will indicate if any changes have been made.

Security

Return to Security

Menu/Tab Security

Control Group maintenance uses four security components. The ControlGroupMaintenanceEdit security component is used to secure the Control Group Maintenance menu option, and all tabs (Master, Schematic, Close History) within (except the Security tab). The Security tab secured by the security component ControlGroupMaintenanceSecurityEdit. The ControlGroupCreate security component control whether the user can create a new Control Group and the ControlGroupDelete security component controls whether the user can delete a Control Group. The ControlGroupCreate and ControlGroupDelete security components must be associated with the user’s Corporate role. In addition, to create or delete a Control Group, the user must also have ControlGroupMaintenanceEdit access on their Corporate role.

See the Appendix below for examples on how to use the ControlGroupMaintenanceSecurityEdit security component.

Control Group Access Security

If you decide to enable Control Group level security, you will need to add the users that will be authorized to the Control Group from the Control Group Maintenance tab.

 Available options include:

  • CGINQUIRIESONLY (Control Group - inquiries only)

  • CGMONTHLYWRK (Control Group - month work)

  • CGMONTHLYWRKMSTR (Control Group - monthly work + masters)

The default is none.

Mass Control Group Security Maintenance

If you have a number of changes to Control Group security to make, for example, a new Production Accountant is taking over responsibility for a number of Control Groups you can use the Mass Control Group Security Maintenance utility. For more information on the utility see Mass Control Group Security Maintenance.

Close History

The Close History tab on the Control Group Master provides you with a historical view of what has happened to the Control Group for a particular production date. It provides a snapshot of when the Control Group was first closed, when amendments were completed, and the reason for the amendments.

  • The Accounting Date on this screen will always be the accounting date that corresponds to the Production Date displayed above the grid.

  • The original Accounting Date the Control Group was closed on will always have an Amendment Status of No.

  • For amendments, the Amendment column will be set to Yes.

  • Carry Over columns will be set to Yes/No (depending on whether the Control Group/region was carried over or not). To learn more about how to carry over a current month by closing it without completing the financial booking, see How To: Carry Over Current Month.

  • Users can then enter their own comments in the Amendment/Carry Over Reason column.

  • The screen is sorted by Accounting Date in descending order, Amendment in ascending order (shows all the current month Control Groups first) and Production Date in descending order.

Injection Facilities (as of Release 25.1)

Once an Injection Facility is attached to a Control Group:

  • Security for the injection facility will be based on Control Group security instead of Corporate, where appropriate.

  • The Injection Facility Maintenance and Injection Facility Balance will check if the injection facility is attached to a Control Group and will reset status when data is modified or prevent modification when the control group is locked/closed.

    • This means that the Control Group will have to be Opened for Amendment in order to make any changes to the injection facility once the production month has been closed.

  • On the various Balance screens, deliveries to an Injection Facility that has Automatically Generate Receipts set to Yes and is linked to a Control Group will not only have the generated receipt kept in sync, but it will also cause the Injection Facility to have its status reset. In addition, when the Injection Facility’s Control Group is locked/closed the delivery will be protected from modification.

  • Injection facilities will appear within the Explorer and the user can access various screens, processes and reports related to injection facilities directly from the Explorer (i.e., Injection Facility Maintenance, Injection Facility Balance, Generate Volumetric, Generate SAF/OAF, etc.).

  • Injection facilities attached to a control group will require Step Processing and will be subject to status resets and control group locking. An injection facility will be like a partner operated battery, in that running STEP01 will automatically run STEP02 and STEP03. The only calculations done during the Step Processing for injection facilities is to generate the data for the Petrinex Volumetric and SAF/OAF (the files must still be created using the Generate Volumetric and Generate SAF/OAF processes at either the facility or control group level.

    • When the Petrinex Volumetric or SAF/OAF is run by Control Group all data associated with Injection Facilities linked to the Control Group will be included in the one Control Group file.

    • When running the Injection Volumetric Files or the SAF/OAF Files from the menu, the option will be available to exclude any injection facilities attached to a control group when including All Injection Facilities. This will make it easy to continue to generate Petrinex reports for injection facilities not attached to control groups, so that the functionality of attaching injection facilities to control groups can be completed in phases, if necessary.

  • Facility Charges can be set up at an injection facility, which is attached to a control group, for calculation and financial booking.

    • Facility Charges set up at an injection facility can only use formulas with one of the following Primary Retrievals:

      • Facility: Charge Per Entity

      • Facility: Charge Per Entity by WIO

      • Monthly Input

      • Receipts: Water Volume by WIO (F97)

    • Facility Charge DOI Exceptions can be set up for an injection facility.

    • Cost Centre Cross Reference can be set up for an injection facility.

    • Voucher Definitions can be set up for an injection facility.

    • FM Cross Reference can bet set up for an injection facility.

  • When the Field Data Capture - Load is run by Control Group, all imported Well Injection records associated with Injection Facilities linked to the Control Group will be loaded.

  • When the Region Close is run, Injection Facilities linked to the Control Groups in the Region will be copied over to the next month.

    • Those injection facilities not linked to a control group will continue to be handled at a corporate level as they are currently.

  • Skim Oil revenue can be booked at Injection Facilities attached to Control Groups. A specific Facility Charge set up is required.
